The shot felt right at the moment it broke, but it was high. The arrow didn't pass through. The deer bolted into the woods and disappeared almost instantly. When we got to where the deer had been standing, there was no blood. No trail. No arrow.
We searched for hours. We eventually found the broadhead end of the arrow, broken off on a branch — but the rest of the arrow, including the nock, was still inside the deer. I was using a lighted nock, but once the deer disappeared into the trees, that light did nothing. No glow. No reference. No direction.
We brought in dogs. We had multiple people searching. At one point, we even considered using a thermal drone. And still — nothing.
